About Larimar | Rocks, Minerals and Gems Encyclopedia

Larimar is a blue stone found only in the Dominican Republic. Just 3% of mined Larimar is gem-quality—meaning the ideal sky-to-ocean blue and dense enough to cut and polish.
This unique stone is a rare variety of pectolite and part of the zeolite family, formed in a one-square-kilometer area within an ancient volcanic complex. Larimar ranges in color from white and gray to green and vibrant blue, often featuring beautiful inclusions of hematite, copper, or calcite.
All Larimar comes from a single mountainside mine with nearly 2,000 hand-dug vertical shafts. It forms as a secondary mineral, filling the vesicles in basalt and andesite lava flows that erupted through limestone millions of years ago.
To protect your Larimar, store it away from direct sunlight—some pieces can fade over time.
